Ramsgate Operatic Society

Ramsgate Operatic Society presents Lerner and Loewe’s best-loved musical "My Fair Lady".
Hailed by both critics and audiences when it first opened on Broadway in 1956, “My Fair Lady” was based on George Bernard Shaw’s play, “Pygmalion” and set the record of being the longest running musical of its day.
It opens with Professor Henry Higgins meeting a fellow phonetics expert, Colonel Pickering, in Covent Garden and boasting that in six months he can pass off a nearby cockney flower-seller, Eliza Doolittle, as a duchess at an embassy ball.
Eliza, intrigued by the idea of improving herself, agrees to Higgins training her to speak English “properly” and during her transformation into a “lady” her admirer, Freddy Eynsford-Hill, falls in love with her.
But when the experiment ends Eliza, finding herself too refined to return to her old life and with no means to live within the new level of society to which she is accepted, must decide where it will be best to remain.
Hit songs include “Wouldn’t it be Loverly”, With a Little Bit of Luck”, “The Rain in Spain”, “I Could Have Danced All Night”, “On the Street Where You Live”, “Get Me to the Church on Time” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to her Face”.
