‘BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL’

Stage Door Theatre Company are proud to announce their next production “Billy Elliot –The Musical” this is in collaboration with Billy Youth Theatre, an exciting new initiative which provides the opportunity to perform this internationally award-winning show. This production will be staged in June 2010, 14th-19th at The Granville Theatre Ramsgate.

Not only will Stage Door Theatre Company be staging its major local production of Billy Elliot but it also has the possibility of performing at a major regional theatre and also, to follow in the steps of Billy and perform at the Billy Youth Theatre West End Gala at the Victoria Palace Theatre, Billy’s London home, in July 2010.

To support their production, Stage Door Director, Heidi Moran and Musical Director, Edward Greenhalgh had the fantastic opportunity in December to take part in an all day workshop led by the award-winning team that brings Billy Elliot to life each day on the London stage.  Participating on the day, alongside writer Lee Hall, were Resident Choreographers, Lee Proud and Damian Jackson, Musical Director, Chris Hatt and Resident Director, Nick Evans as well as some former and current cast members including current Billy Elliot, Tom Holland.

Lee Hall, who originally conceived the idea behind Billy Youth Theatre, said: “I am delighted that young people around the country will have the opportunity to bring the story of Billy Elliot to life in their local communities with the help and guidance of our creative team”.

This production of Billy Elliot the Musical is being produced as part of The Billy Youth Theatre.

Bit about the show....................

Based on the smash hit film, Billy Elliot the Musical is an inspirational story of one boy’s dream to realise his ambitions against the odds. Set in the North East of England against the background of the historic 1984/85 miners' strike, Billy pursues his passion for dance in secret to avoid disapproval of his struggling family.

The award-winning creative team behind the film, writer Lee Hall, director Stephen Daldry and choreographer Peter Darling were joined by the incomparable Sir Elton John to create a musical that is funny, uplifting and immensely entertaining.

If Billy Elliot is about one thing it is that we are all capable of making lives for ourselves which are full of joy and self-expression, whilst we might not all become ballet dancers we are capable of finding moments of real profundity and creativity whatever our circumstances. But more than that we have a duty to ourselves and each other to create a society where this possibility in all of us is nurtured and can flourish. We owe it to the next generation to create a world where it is possible for the Billy Elliots as yet unborn to have a chance to succeed and flourish rather than be fed to the machine which grinds us into identical pieces only fit for consumption. If Billy Elliot conveys any message at all I hope it is that it is possible to fight back and resist and it is possible to move on without forgetting where you come from.
